Al Scheaffer Inspecting His Rifle, August 1944

This photograph shows Al Schaefer. He has the bolt open, his thumb on the open bolt, and he's sighting down the barrel for dust. Texas was very dusty and it was all over everything. Al and I were best friends, and I wrote a poem about him called "Why".

Phil Colunga in the Woods at Camp Bowie, Texas

This is Phil Colunga in a manhole during maneuvers. We were only at Camp Bowie for a week, but I must have had film that week as there are a number of pictures in the album. Camp Bowie had trees, Camp Barkeley did not, that's how I can tell the pictures apart..

I'm sitting on my bunk, Allendoerfer's bunk is in front of me, with its mattress folded so we wouldn't lie down on them during the day.

I'm taking a bath, using my helmet as a bowl. The helmet liner is in front. There's a bayonet knife to the left. I'm wearing white underwear, later we were issued green.
